Jake Marisnick suspended two games by MLB for collision at home with Jonathan Lucroy  3 Months ago

Major League Baseball announced Thursday that it is suspending Houston Astros outfielder Jake Marisnick for two games as punishment for his violent collision at the plate with Jonathan Lucroy on Sunday.

Marisnick crashed into the Los Angeles Angels catcher while trying to score on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of a tie game. He was called out for interference following the collision. Lucroy suffered a concussion and broken nose on the play.

"After thoroughly reviewing the play from all angles, I have concluded that Jake’s actions warrant discipline," MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre said in a statement. "While I do not believe that Jake intended to injure Jonathan, the contact he initiated in his attempt to score violated Official Baseball Rule 6.01(i), which is designed to protect catchers from precisely this type of collision."

Marisnick will appeal the suspension, according to multiple reports. The league also fined him an undisclosed amount.

The 28-year-old outfielder drew plenty of criticism for the play. St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina used several expletives in a response to it on social media.

"I watched the play again and it looks — he just drops right in front of me and once I kind of made a decision, it was too late," Marisnick told reporters after Sunday night's game. "It was a bad play and I hope he's OK."
